What is organic?

Tuesday November 15, 2011

12 noon - 1 p.m.
3 Summit Park Auditorium (Lower Level)
Independence(just west of Rockside at 77 exit) .

Come hear our expert describe what is organic and have your questions answered.  Matt Fritz and associates from Blue Sky Green Feild , our online worksite fruit and vegetable delivery program, will lead the discussion. The word "organic" refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. Farmers who grow organic produce and meat don't use conventional methods to fertilize, control weeds or prevent livestock disease. For example, rather than using chemical weedkillers, organic farmers may conduct more sophisticated crop rotations and spread mulch or manure to keep weeds at bay.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed. Any product labeled as organic must be USDA certified. Only producers who sell less than $5,000 a year in organic foods are exempt from this certification; however, they're still required to follow the USDA's standards for organic foods. If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means it's produced and processed according to the USDA standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it..

The overall cost of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is estimated to cost $940 Billion between 2010 to 2019 (Health Care Reform Law).  This calculation includes $508 Billion in new taxes and fees related to health care costs among other things.  As employers consider ways to manage their portion of this substantial financial obligation, many employers are revisiting how they can shave health care costs by having a healthier workplace.  A healthier workplace usually occurs over time as a culture of wellness is instilled in employees.  This culture can be created through financial incentives for employees to get and stay healthy (even cash for calories).  Employers have shown significant success in the area of wellness incentives  but not without potential risks.

About The Presenter Christel Turner is a 1992 graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law and she now is in private practice with a special interest in workplace wellness.  Turner is in the process of designing a Spring 2011 law course in workplace wellness and healthcare reform for  Cleveland Marshall College of Law.  Turner also spends half of her work life teaching fitness at workplaces and gyms all around greater Cleveland.

Mental Health First Aid Certification

Tuesday May 18. 2010

12 noon - 1 p.m.
3 Summit Park Auditorium (Lower Level)
Independence(just west of Rockside at 77 exit)
.
In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month we are hosting a speaker to discuss a new certification program on Mental Health First Aid.
The goal of Mental Health First Aid is to increase mental health literacy. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step process to assess a situation, select and implement appropriate interventions, and help the individual in crisis connect with appropriate care. Like CPR training helps a non-medical professional assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps an individual who doesn’t have clinical training assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Our discussion will provide the benefits to employers of adding this important program to a well rounded Wellness program that may already include ‘physical’ first aid.

Our presenter:
Shanna Dunbar is one of only two certified instructors in the State of Ohio to teach Mental Health First Aid certification, Shanna brings over 20 years of occupational health and wellness experience. As a board certified occupational health nurse her career focus has been to assist employers in the reduction of health care costs by developing and properly managing their health care programs including health promotion, risk reduction and early identification. Mental Health First Aid is a timely topic since more employees are being asked to accomplish more with fewer resources and stress in the workplace is at an all time high.
