Gail Tomba  Director

W.O.. Walker Building

The Wellness Council would like to thank Gail Tomba, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Health System Wellness Department, who conducted the tour of the facility on July 13, 2004. Gail is a graduate of CSU in Exercise Science and Sports management and  has been with the Wellness Center since inception.

Hours and staffing:  The Center is staffed by five full time employees and multiple activity instructors.  The Center is operational from 5 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday, Saturday 10 am to 2 pm.

History: The Wellness Center opened in 1984, under the direction of William Zuti, Ph.D. as an employee benefit.  Slight patient integration began initially and grew rapidly when the Center moved to the much larger W. O. Walker Center in 1997. Integration has been extremely successful. The key is scheduling all activities and usage efficiently.

Philosophy: To offer exercise science based testing and individually designed exercise programs, in an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle for all members and employees.

Membership: To become a member, employees fill out a health screening questionnaire. Each member is provided an individual  orientation to the center. The members pay a nominal yearly fee of $250 which can be payroll deducted.

Popular programs/services: The best promotion last year was "Boot Camp", a strength training class. The most popular pieces of equipment are the elipticals, treadmills, and recumbent bikes.

Management Expectations: To encourage a healthy lifestyle for all  employees and members.

Directors comments: Gail Tomba stressed the importance of marketing. She highly recommends brainstorming with your staff on a regular basis to develop marketing strategies.  For example a new color brochure was designed this year to increase membership.
